Uganda gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to around half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Starting from Kigali, the drive to southern Bwindi takes about 4 to 5 hours, much shorter than driving from Entebbe. The Uganda gorilla permit costs less than Rwanda’s, which makes this one of the best value gorilla safaris in Africa.

Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda are covered by the East Africa Tourist Visa (about USD 100, 90 days, multiple entry between the three). Tanzania needs its own visa. Kenya-only travellers apply for an eTA online before flying.

Frequently asked questions
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
A moderate level of fitness is enough. Treks take from 1 to 6 hours on steep, muddy trails. Porters and walking sticks make it much easier.
What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
The minimum age is 15 years in both Uganda and Rwanda.
Why start from Kigali instead of Entebbe?
Kigali is about 4 to 5 hours from southern Bwindi, while Entebbe is 8 to 10 hours by road. Flying into Kigali saves a full day.
