Park fees, permits and visas
A Rwanda gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person (set by the Rwanda Development Board) and gives you one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Permits are limited, so we recommend booking 3 to 6 months ahead.
Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda are covered by the East Africa Tourist Visa (about USD 100, 90 days, multiple entry between the three). Tanzania needs its own visa. Kenya-only travellers apply for an eTA online before flying.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Rwanda’s gorilla permit more expensive?
Rwanda follows a high-value, low-impact model. The higher price funds conservation and community projects, and the park is far closer to the capital than Uganda’s parks.
Can I do gorilla trekking as a day trip from Kigali?
Yes, it is possible with a 4:00am start, but we recommend one night near the park so you are rested for the trek.
What should I pack for gorilla trekking?
Waterproof jacket, long trousers, hiking boots, garden gloves for nettles, a hat and a small daypack with water.
